Micro managers tend to be highly involved in day-to-day operations, providing specific instructions, closely scrutinizing work, and demanding constant updates. They often have a strong desire to maintain control and ensure that tasks are executed precisely as they envision.

Examples of micro management include:

A manager who reviews and edits every line of code written by their software development team, leading to a lack of autonomy and stifling creativity.

A supervisor who consistently hovers over employees' shoulders, dictating every step of a project and offering minimal room for independent decision-making.

A team leader who requires frequent progress reports and status updates from team members, leaving little flexibility for self-management and prioritization.

Macro Management:

Macro management involves providing broader guidance, setting goals, and delegating responsibilities to individuals or teams. Macro managers focus on defining strategic objectives, establishing performance metrics, and empowering employees to take ownership of their work. They provide support, resources, and feedback, but allow individuals to exercise autonomy and make decisions within the defined framework.

Examples of macro management include:

A CEO who sets the vision and long-term goals for the organization, delegating the implementation and day-to-day operations to department heads.

A project manager who assigns tasks to team members, provides them with the necessary resources and guidance, and trusts them to deliver results within the established timeline and quality standards.

A supervisor who sets clear expectations and performance metrics for their sales team, allowing each team member the freedom to devise their own strategies and approaches to achieve targets.

The key distinction between micro management and macro management is the level of control and involvement in the details of tasks. Micro management can be detrimental as it can hinder employee autonomy, creativity, and job satisfaction. It may create a culture of dependency and reduce the overall efficiency of the team. On the other hand, macro management fosters a more empowering and autonomous work environment, leading to increased employee engagement, innovation, and accountability.

It's important to note that effective management often requires a balance between micro and macro approaches, depending on the situation, the capabilities of the individuals involved, and the nature of the tasks at hand.
