The 50 richest people on earth




The wealthiest 50 people in the world control a staggering portion of the world economy: $1.46 trillion — more than the annual GDP of Australia, Spain, or Mexico.
That's according to new data provided to Business Insider by Wealth-X, which conducts research on the super-wealthy. Wealth-X maintains a database of dossiers on more than 110,000 ultra-high-net-worth people, using a proprietary valuation model that takes into account each person's assets, then adjusts estimated net worth to account for currency-exchange rates, local taxes, savings rates, investment performance, and other factors.
Its latest ranking of the world's billionaires found that 29 of the top 50 hail from the US and nearly a quarter made their fortunes in tech. To crack this list, you'd need to have a net worth of at least $14.3 billion. And for the most part these people weren't born with a silver spoon. More than two-thirds are completely self-made, having built some of the most powerful companies, including Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, Google, Nike, and Oracle.
From tech moguls and retail giants to heirs and heiresses, here are the billionaires with the deepest pockets around the globe.

At 20, Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote borrowed money from his uncle to start a business that dealt in commodities trading, cement, and building materials. He quickly expanded to import cars during the country's economic boom. Four years later, in 1981, he formed Dangote Group, an international conglomerate that now holds diversified interests that include food and beverages, plastics manufacturing, real estate, logistics, telecommunications, steel, oil, and gas. At $14.3 billion, Dangote's fortune is the largest in Africa and equal to 2.5% of Nigeria's GDP.
The majority of Dangote's wealth stems from his stake in Dangote Cement, which is publicly traded on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. He owns cement plants in Zambia, Senegal, Tanzania, and South Africa, and in 2011 invested $4 billion to build a facility on the Ivory Coast. Dangote bought back a majority stake in Dangote Flour Mills — which had grown unprofitable after he sold a large stake to South African food company Tiger Brands three years ago for $190 million — in December for just $1. He is also chairman of The Dangote Foundation, which focuses on education and health initiatives, including a $12,000-per-day feeding program.

Before revolutionizing the hedge fund industry with his mathematics-based approach, "Quant King" James Simons worked as a code breaker for the US Department of Defense during the Vietnam War, but was fired after criticizing the war in the press. He chaired the math department at Stony Brook University for a decade until leaving in 1978 to start a quantitative-trading firm. That firm, now called Renaissance Technologies, has more than $65 billion in assets under management among its many funds.
Simons has always dreamed big. About 10 years ago, he announced that he was starting a fund that he claimed would be able to handle $100 billion, about 10% of all assets managed by hedge funds at the time. That fund, Renaissance Institutional Equities Fund, never quite reached his aspirations — it currently handles about $10.5 billion — but his flagship Medallion fund is among the best-performing ever: It has generated a nearly 80% annualized return before fees since its inception in 1988.
In October, Renaissance shut down a $1 billion fund — one of its smaller ones — "due to a lack of investor interest." The firm's other funds, however, have been up and climbing. Simons retired in 2009, but remains chairman of the company.

Jobs' stake in Disney — which has nearly tripled in value since her husband's death in 2011 and comprises more than $12 billion of her net worth — makes her the company's largest individual shareholder.
Though she's best recognized through her iconic husband, Jobs has had a career of her own. She worked on Wall Street for Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs before earning her MBA at Stanford in 1991, after which she married her late husband and started organic-foods company Terravera. But she's been primarily preoccupied with philanthropic ventures, with a particular focus on education. In 1997, she founded College Track, an after-school program that helps low-income students prepare for and enroll in college, and in September she committed $50 million to a new project called XQ: The Super School Project, which aims to revamp the high-school curriculum and experience.
Last October, Jobs spoke out against "Steve Jobs," Aaron Sorkin's movie about her late husband that portrays him in a harsh light, calling it "fiction." Jobs had been against the project from the get-go, reportedly calling Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale to ask them to decline roles in the film.

Like several of his fellow 21st-century Chinese billionaires, Lei Jun earned his $14.4 billion fortune in tech. His smartphone maker, Xiaomi, became the fourth-largest smartphone vendorin the world, and the largest in China, within about three years of its founding.
Lei got his start in tech shortly after college when he joined Kingsoft, a Chinese software company similar to Microsoft, as an engineer. During his tenure at Kingsoft, Lei served as chief technology officer, president, and CEO, succeeding in taking the company public in 2007 before resigning. In 2010, after spending a few years as a venture capitalist, the already-wealthy Chinese entrepreneur founded Xiaomi with a former Google China executive. Lei was appointed chairman of Kingsoft in 2011 and forged a partnership between the two companies to provide cloud-storage capabilities for his phones.
Xiaomi, often referred to as "the Apple of China," is now the second most valuable private-tech company in the world, with a $46 billion valuation. But as sales growth has slowed, experts are contemplating the sustainability of Xiaomi's business model in overseas markets.

After four years away from satellite TV provider Dish Network, the company he founded in 1980, Charlie Ergen returned to his position as CEO last spring. But Ergen's reunion cameamid difficult times for Dish, as the company has been striving to stem its slipping number of subscribers.
But one of the network's newest services might be its saving grace. Last January, the company launched Sling TV, a streaming service that allows subscribers to watch their favorite channels, such as ESPN and Food Network, online for only $20 per month. Though Sling is a 180-degree pivot from Dish's signature product, it has caught on with customers, inspiring copycat services and potentially providing the struggling company with the leg up it needed.
Despite not offering wireless plans to subscribers, Ergen also bought up nearly $10 billion worth of wireless-spectrum licenses at an auction last year. But the purchase incited significant backlash against Dish, which through two controlled affiliates had secured a 25% small-business discount that was subsequently revoked by the FCC. The company was forced to pay penalties exceeding $500 million to the FCC and surrender some of the licenses. Controversy surrounding Ergen's leadership is nothing new, however. His reputation for cutthroat business tactics in the past led The Hollywood Reporter to dub him the "the most hated man in Hollywood."

Ray Dalio's hedge fund, Bridgewater Associates, is the biggest in the world, managing a portfolio of around $154 billion in global investments.
At the top of his industry and having amassed an enormous fortune, Dalio has more recently focused on giving away money and advice. He's taken the Giving Pledge, committing to donate the majority of his wealth to charity. And last year he shared his highly coveted "investment secrets," albeit in an unorthodox manner for a hedge funder, in a 30-minute YouTube video, which has been watched more than 2 million times. His 123-page, self-published manual on his principles of money management and leadership is also seen as somewhat of a bible among the investment world.
Dalio has always taken a radical approach to management, making everything he and his fund does completely transparent to employees. And it's worked well for him: Bridgewater, while sometimes viewed as "cultish," is one of the most coveted places to work in finance. Dalio has said that he attributes his success, in part, to reminding himself that history repeats itself and keeping track of the decisions he's made that didn't work.

After graduating from the University of Calcutta in 1982, Dilip Shanghvi started working at his father's wholesale generic-drugs business, where he saw an opportunity to manufacture Lithosun, a drug that treated manic-depressive disorders and was unavailable in much of eastern India. That was the genesis of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, which Shangvi founded in 1983 with a $1,000 investment from his father.
In its first year of business, Sun Pharma generated more than $100,000 in sales, and in 1994 the company went public on the Bombay Stock Exchange. It began expanding shortly thereafter, entering the global generic-drug market by acquiring Michigan-based Caraco Pharmaceuticals Laboratories in 1997, the first of many international acquisitions. In 2012, Shanghvi stepped down as chairman and now serves as managing director of the company, which generates $4.5 billion in sales.
Early in 2015, Shanghvi became the richest man in India for a period of time after his company's stocks surged. No matter the number, Shanghvi remains devoted to philanthropy as founder and chairman of the Shantilal Shanghvi Foundation, which donates to education, social-welfare, and community-development causes.

43. Azim Premji

In 1966, 21-year-old Azim Premji dropped out of Stanford in the wake of his father's death to take the helm of his father's company Western India Vegetable Products — later renamed Wipro. It was under Premji's leadership that the company diversified into toiletries and bath products and, eventually, IT, and the company grew exponentially. Now India's third-largest IT giant, Wipro generated revenues of $7.6 billion in its most recent fiscal year.
Just days into the new year, Premji named Abidali Neemuchwala, a Dallas-based consultancy executive, the new CEO of Wipro, citing him as the best leader to take Wipro into "its next phase of growth." Neemuchwala had been brought on to Wipro as chief operating officer last April after years of working for rival Tata Consultancy Services.
Premji is known for his generosity. He signed the Giving Pledge, committing to donate at least half of his wealth to charity, and in 2015 was named "the most generous Indian" on the Hurun India Philanthropy list for the third year in a row.

After earning degrees at Columbia University and Harvard Business School, Len Blavatnik — a Ukraine-born American — founded Access Industries, a privately held industrial company, in 1986. The company began with only Russian investments, but it now boasts a diverse portfolio that includes natural resources, chemicals, media and telecommunications, and real estate.
Blavatnik built his fortune through business savvy and a knack for making well-timed investments. In 2004, his company purchased a 20% stake in Tory Burch, becoming the first and largest outside investor in the fashion house, which has since blossomed into a powerhouse retailer worth over $3 billion. He's credited with one of the greatest investments of all time in his risky buyout of petrochemicals maker LyondellBasell, which he purchased out of bankruptcy amid the financial crisis for north of $2 billion. The value of his stake had jumped to more than $10 billion in 2014. He incurred a comparatively measly fine of $656,000 from the Federal Trade Commission in October for failing to properly report his investments in the company.
Recently he's tried his hand as a music mogul, purchasing Warner Music Group in 2011 for $3.3 billion. Two years later, he bought British label Parlophone for $742 million, giving him an expanded roster of musical acts that includes Coldplay, Blur, Metallica, and Bruno Mars. His music holdings also include investments in emerging-technology companies such as Spotify and Beats Electronics.

41. Donald Bren

Donald Bren, the wealthiest real-estate mogul in America, is the sole owner of The Irvine Co., a private real-estate developer with properties primarily in Orange County and along the California coast. After serving three years as an officer in the US Marine Corps, the then 26-year-old founded Bren Co. in 1958 and built his first property in Newport Beach, California, with a $10,000 bank loan.
In 1977, Bren and his business partners purchased The Irvine Co. — named for one of Orange County’s earliest developers — for $337 million. Bren held a 34% stake in the company and served as the vice chairman before buying out five stockholders, which increased his stake in the company to 86%. By 1996, he became the sole owner of the company, whose portfolio of properties — collectively known as the Irvine Master Plan — exceeds 110 million square feet and includes 500 office buildings, 41 retail centers, 130 apartment communities, three hotels, five marinas, and three golf clubs. Last year Ma made two big deals. In April, he bought a $400 million stake in Chinese classified-listings platform 58.com, of which Tencent already owned a 25% share. That same month he also bought a 15% stake in mobile-game maker Glu Mobile for $126 million.

Allen Family Foundation gives to global health causes, including $5 million to Seattle BioMed, $4 million to Global FinPrint — a conservation project focused on the preservation of sharks worldwide — and $7 million in grants to Alzheimer's research. During West Africa's Ebola pandemic in 2014, Allen gave more than $100 million to develop solutions to stem the outbreak. In October 2015, the foundation announced seven new grants totaling $11 million to prevent future widespread Ebola outbreaks.

Carl Icahn has made a lifelong habit and lucrative career out of agitating undervalued and poorly managed companies to change their ways. Since founding his own investment firm in 1968, Icahn has become one of the most powerful people in finance, investing in scores of high-profile companies, including RJR Nabisco, Philips Petroleum, Viacom, Marvel, Time Warner, Netflix, and Herbalife.
And he usually gets his way. When Icahn revealed that he held a stake in Apple worth more than $1 billion in 2013, the company's stock shot up and CEO Tim Cook responded to Icahn's critique of the company. Cook has even come around to some of Icahn's views, and Icahn said in the fall that he may buy an even larger stake.
Now Icahn's leading the charge against AIG, publishing an open letter in January calling for the insurance giant to break up into a "smaller, simpler company."
Icahn has said that he has no plans of retiring from pestering corporate executives, but a career shift may nonetheless be in the works. Donald Trump has said that if elected US president, he would bring Icahn in as Treasury secretary — a position which Icahn said he would acceptdespite some disagreements with the combative real-estate mogul's positions.

While he was a premed student at the University of Texas at Austin in 1984, Michael Dellstarted a company called PC Ltd., the predecessor to Dell Inc., with a seed fund of $1,000. Dell soon dropped out of college to build computers full-time and found himself at the helm of one of the fastest-growing companies in the country, with $6 million in sales in its first year of business.
By the time he was 23, the company went public and raised $30 million — $18 million of it going to Dell personally. Four years later, the CEO became the youngest man to ever lead a Fortune 500 company. Aside from a brief hiatus as CEO between 2004 and 2007, Dell has been the chairman and CEO of Dell Inc. since its inception. After a furious battle with Carl Icahn, Dell took his computer company private again in 2013 in a deal valued at nearly $25 billion.
Despite spending millions on fancy toys and impressive real estate, Dell is generous. He's given more than $1.1 billion through the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, which primarily supports education, social- and human-services, arts and culture, and community-development causes. A year ago, the foundation pledged $25 million to fund the construction of a new teaching hospital, set to open in Austin in 2017.

Six years later, he opened his own factory, the predecessor to what's known today as CK Hutchison Holdings, a vast business empire with interests in real estate, manufacturing, energy, telecommunications, and technology. A savvy investor, Li and his venture-capital fund Horizon Ventures have backed companies like Facebook, Skype, Spotify, and the egg-replacement food startup Hampton Creek.
Last year Li reorganized his business affairs under two new listed companies, one entity for property holdings and another for all other global assets. The move is most likely in preparation to hand over control of his sprawling fortune to his son, but the 87-year-old doesn't have any plans of slowing down just yet. In August, he opened the 12,000th location of AS Watson, CK Hutchison's health and beauty-products retailer, now the largest in the world.

Even at 80, Leonardo Del Vecchio still chairs Luxottica, the nearly $30 billion company he founded in 1961. Though Del Vecchio started Luxottica as a tiny one-room enterprise in Milan, it now operates 10 factories worldwide, employs 35,000 people, and produces more than 65,000 pairs of glasses per day, holding a veritable monopoly on the eyewear industry.
Del Vecchio isn't all business, though. Last March, he showed his generous side by giving his Italian employees $10 million worth of shares in the company to celebrate his 80th birthday.

The German billionaire lives a quiet life out of the spotlight with his wife and two kids in their hometown of Heilbronn. He's reportedly a generous donor to educational causes.

Born in Budapest, George Soros lived through the Nazi occupation of Hungary during WWII before fleeing to the UK and later settling in the US. In 1992 he shorted the British pound, a risky move that ended up earning the fund $1 billion in a single day and solidifying Soros' place in the finance world. Quantum Fund also generated annual returns over 30% under Soros' leadership, making it one of the most successful hedge funds of all time.
Today, Soros remains chairman of Soros Fund Management, which manages more than $25 billion in assets, including stakes in prominent companies like Amazon, Facebook, and Netflix. He's also chairman of Open Society, an organization he founded in 1979 that operates as a network of foundations and partners across the globe that promote the values of open society and human rights.
Soros is actively interested in politics as well, seen as a friend to liberals and an enemy of conservatives in the US. He donated $2 million to super PACs supporting Hillary Clinton last year, and warned against the "siren songs" of Donald Trump and Ted Cruz in a recent op-ed for The Guardian.

Jeff Bezos earned his massive fortune by introducing e-commerce to the world. After spending time in finance on Wall Street, Bezos founded Amazon.com in the garage of his Seattle home in 1994 and operated it exclusively as an online book retailer. The company went public three years later and has since grown to include everything from furniture to food to Amazon's own consumer-electronics products, generating $89 billion in sales in 2014.
While Bezos, chairman and CEO, faced a barrage of negative media attention last year for reports that Amazon's warehouses are high-pressure, toxic work environments — claims he disputed — the internet retailer continues to thrive with the growth of Amazon Web Services, the company's cloud-computing branch, and a bold plan to conquer India's "trillion dollar" online-retail market.
Bezos also has interests outside of Amazon, including investments in his privately owned space company Blue Origin, which successfully launched its first spacecraft in 2015, and The Washington Post, the newspaper he bought in 2013. And early this month he invested millionsin a company that's creating a simple blood test to detect every form of cancer.

Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett started his prodigious investing career at a young age. As a child he delivered newspapers on his bike, and by 11 the precocious Nebraska native had purchased his first shares in the stock market — Cities Service Preferred at $38 apiece — and sold them for a $5 profit. He was rejected from Harvard Business School, so Buffett went to Columbia Business School instead and learned under iconic value investor Benjamin Graham, who would become a mentor to the budding financier. Buffett worked as a securities analyst in the early-1950s before starting his own investment firm. He bought textile company Berkshire Hathaway in 1969, transforming it into a holding company that would house the many lucrative investments that helped build his massive fortune and earn the nickname "The Oracle of Omaha."
The array of portfolio companies and investments that made him rich may appear random — he's bet on companies including Coca-Cola, American Express, Geico, Fruit of the Loom, Dairy Queen, and General Motors — but they're all cash-generating machines that offer long-term value. In August he announced his largest acquisition ever: a $37.2 billion buyout of nuts and bolts maker Precision Castparts.
A frugal man with a fondness for junk food, perhaps the most impressive part of Buffett's $60 billion fortune is that it doesn't include the $21.5 billion he's already given away. He's good friends with Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, whom he collaborated with to create the Giving Pledge, a promise for billionaires to give away at least half of their wealth to charity.

With a net worth in excess of $66 billion, Amancio Ortega is the second-richest man in the world thanks to his control of the Spanish fashion behemoth Inditex, which Ortega — who started out as a delivery boy for a local clothing store at 14 — turned from a small-town dress shop into one of the largest fashion empires on the planet.
His rising wealth is tied to the spike in the growth of Inditex, which saw its stock rise 34% last year. Sales were up 16% and profits increased 20% for the first nine months of 2015, and the company opened 230 new stores across 48 markets. Much of this success can be attributed to fast-fashion giant Zara, the company's biggest brand. The chain is changing the landscape of retail as its chic yet affordable designs continue to appeal to demanding customers who constantly crave new styles at low prices.
Yet despite Ortega's immense wealth, he lives humbly. The billionaire still eats lunch with his employees in the company cafeteria, and though he's the richest person in the fashion industry, he sticks to a simple uniform of a white shirt and blue blazer.

At just 20, Bill Gates cofounded Microsoft with his childhood friend Paul Allen. Months before his 31st birthday, the company went public, making Gates a billionaire. He served as CEO of the software titan until 2000 and was its chairman and largest shareholder until 2014. Though he still sits on the company's board, Gates — whose net worth sits a league above the rest at $87.4 billion — is no longer actively involved in Microsoft.
Gates is not only the richest man in the world, but he's also the most generous. Since 1999, Gates and his wife have helmed the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the most powerful charities in the world. The foundation — which controls an endowment of more than $40 billion — aims to lift millions of people out of poverty, with a heavy focus on eliminating HIV, malaria, and other infectious diseases. The couple is also working on a plan to bring mobile banking to the 2 billion adults who don't have a bank account. Plus, Gates recently invested alongside Jeff Bezos in Grail, the company that's creating a blood test to detect every form of cancer.
He's also cofounder of the Giving Pledge, which he launched in 2010 with good friend and fellow billionaire Warren Buffett as a promise to donate 50% or more of their fortunes. The Giving Pledge now counts Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk among its 137 members.

The recent launches

Opdivo – Bristol-Myers Squibb

A recent analysis of Big Pharma growth rates over the next decade by analysts at Bernstein highlights the importance of Opdivo to Bristol-Myers Squibb's long-term performance. The PD-1 inhibitor is already approved for melanoma and second-line non-small-cell lung cancer. Pivotal data in the much larger first-line NSCLC market is due to be unveiled later this year. Merck & Co. hopes to present similar data for its competing therapy Keytruda by the end of 2016.

Entresto – Novartis

A 2015 approval, Novartis' heart failure treatment Entresto will be one of the most scrutinised in terms of uptake over the course of the next 12 months. Management has sought to lower expectation, particularly in the US market, but a stronger trajectory will be expected in the second half of 2016 as reimbursement hurdles are overcome. With a lack of competition on the horizon, peak annual sales could exceed $10 billion, suggest analysts.

Darzalex – Johnson & Johnson


When Johnson & Johnson releases its 2015 full-year results next week, a familiar narrative will likely emerge; which pipeline therapies will replicate the considerable success enjoyed in terms of new product launches over the past 6 years? The answer is possibly already on the market: Darzalex, approved in late 2015 for the treatment of late-stage multiple myeloma, has key opinion leaders very excited (ViewPoints: Johnson & Johnson's Darzalex tops ASH winners list). Genmab – which discovered the antibody – has likened Johnson & Johnson's study programme to a military campaign in its breath of coverage. Commercial uptake and progress on line extensions will be watched closely by investors.

Repatha/Praluent – Amgen/Regeneron & Sanofi

Approved by the FDA last year for the treatment of primary hyperlipidaemia and homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia, uptake of the PCSK9 inhibitors Repatha (Amgen) and Praluent (Regeneron Pharmaceuticals/Sanofi) will be watched with much interest over the coming months. More significant will be cardiovascular outcomes data, which Amgen expects to publish later this year. If the results are positive, the sales trajectory of both products is likely to improve considerably (Physician Views Poll Results: Taking an early look at the competing anti-PCSK9 mAb launches). Will Pfizer file its competing PCSK-9 inhibitor bococizumab this year? Their outcomes data is due to be announced in 2018.

The new approvals


Ocrelizumab – Roche

Due to be filed with regulators imminently, analysts are confident that Roche's ocrelizumab will be approved – by the FDA at least – by the end of 2016. Critically, the drug looks odds on to secure approval for both relapsing remitting and primary progressive forms of multiple sclerosis; in the case of the latter indication, it will be the first therapy to do so. (Physician Views Poll Results – Roche's ocrelizumab will compete with oral multiple sclerosis therapies, say neurologists). Biogen will present Phase II data this year for anti-Lingo; expectations have fallen, but the remyelination therapy could be transformative; both for Biogen and in how MS is treated.

Venetoclax – AbbVie/Roche

Earlier this month, AbbVie and Roche confirmed the FDA has granted priority review status to venetoclax as a secondary therapy for lymphocytic leukaemia, which suggests US approval will occur this year. For AbbVie in particular, venetoclax appears key to the company's commercial aspirations in the leukaemia market, primarily through combination usage with Imbruvica. Key opinion leaders think the drug can be a game changer.

grazoprevir/elbasvir – Merck & Co.

Despite dominance of the hepatitis C market by Gilead Sciences' Sovaldi and Harvoni mega-brands, key opinion leaders and analysts are enthused about the opportunity for Merck & Co.'s combination of grazoprevir and elbasvir, in terms of impressive efficacy in niche populations such as patients with chronic kidney disease, those co-infected with HIV and intravenous drug users. Physicians also view launch of this combination – which is expected to gain FDA approval by the end of January – as potentially improving access and reducing the cost of therapy, if Merck chooses to price at a sufficient enough discount versus AbbVie's Viekira Pak franchise (JP Morgan 2016: Gilead exudes confidence on the eve of Merck & Co.'s HCV landfall).

Baricitinib – Eli Lilly & Incyte

Can Eli Lilly's revival continue and what role will the JAK inhibitor baricitinib play? The oral therapy was submitted to the FDA last week for the treatment of moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis, which should see approval secured by late 2016. Baricitinib enters the regulatory arena backed with a comprehensive Phase III data set; most significantly it has bettered current standard of care Humira (AbbVie) in head to-head studies (Physician Views: Now filed with the FDA, how do rheumatologists assess the opportunity for baricitinib?)

The pipeline candidates

atezolizumab - Roche

Can Roche successfully deliver the third PD-(L)1 inhibitor to market (after Merck's Keytruda and Bristol-Myers Squibb's Opdivo). Regulatory filings in second-line bladder cancer and second-line non-small cell lung cancer in early 2016. Analysts remain confident that Phase II data will be sufficient to secure approval in the lung cancer setting, but it remains to be seen if atezolizumab can gain share at the expense of the two earlier launches. Roche's combination studies with chemotherapy in first-line patients continue to intrigue.

Dupilumab – Regeneron & Sanofi

Phase III data for Sanofi and Regeneron's dupilumab in atopic dermatitis is expected in the very near future. Speaking at the JP Morgan Healthcare conference earlier this month, Regeneron CEO Leonard Schleifer has high hopes for dupilumab across a range of allergic conditions, where he believes the antibody could be "transformative." Solanezumab – Eli Lilly

Can Eli Lilly's experimental Alzheimer's disease treatment solanezumab deliver a definitively positive outcome in Phase III studies at the second time of asking? Many are doubtful, but investors are hopeful; approvable-data would be transformational for the company. In the Alzheimer's disease development space, also watch for progress with the BACE inhibitors; Merck & Co. is leading the race with AstraZeneca/Eli Lilly not far behind.

CAR-T therapies – Novartis, Juno Therapeutics, Kite Pharmaceuticals
Focus around CAR-T therapies will shift in part this year from the clinical to regulatory arena. Novartis is awaiting pivotal data in paediatric relapsing, remitting acute lymphoblastic leukaemia with a US filing anticipated in late 2016. Juno Therapeutics is on track to submit its CAR-T treatment JCAR15 for adult ALL by year end, with Kite hopeful of filing KTE-C19 in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in 2016 also.

ITCA-650 – Intarcia

Speaking to FirstWord earlier this month, Intarcia CEO Kurt Graves confirmed the company's diabetes treatment ITCA-650 will be filed in mid-2016. ITCA-650 is a small implantable device which delivers regular dosing of the GLP-1 agonist exenatide over a six or 12 month period. Graves outlined Intarcia's commercial strategy to FirstWord last year; understandably it will be built around the theme of improved compliance

The biosimilars battleground

Benepali – Samsung Bioepis

Approved in the EU last week, Biogen expects to launch Benepali – a biosimilar version of Amgen and Pfizer's Enbrel – over the coming weeks. Benepali represents the second complex biosimilar to be approved in Europe and a first for both Biogen and partner Samsung in this segment. The Korean technology player has delivered on bullish promises; Benepali has moved from non-clinical development to approval in four years (Physician Views: How will rheumatologists use Biogen and Samsung's biosimilar Enbrel product?).

Remsima – Celltrion & Pfize

Will Celltrion's Remsima – a version of Johnson & Johnson/Merck & Co.'s Remicade – become the first biosimilar monoclonal antibody to gain US approval later this year? A re-scheduled AdCom meeting on February 9 (a March 2015 meeting was postponed for undisclosed reason) will provide a clearer indication. Pfizer will market Remsima in the US, having acquired Celltrion's existing partner Hospira last year.

Humira – AbbVie

The TNF inhibitor is the world's best-selling drug, with 2015 sales forecast to reach around $14 billion. AbbVie believes that patent exclusivity will hold until 2022, but is yet to fully convince Wall Street. Focus in 2016 will remain sharpened on this narrative as the biosimilar market continues to evolve and AbbVie's patent estate comes under further scrutiny. Recent events are in the company's favour.

Spider Web Graphs are helpful to graphically illustrate how different customer segments value different elements of a product or service offering. In the attached example, one segment of a life sciences supply company (high-end users) values the company’s regulatory and maintenance services very highly, and is less concerned about the ease of use of the products or their price. Contrasting this spider graph with that of another segment will visually highlight important differences in decision criteria.


The attached PPT chart is actually based on an underlying XLS tool, where data points from various respondents can be translated directly into the chart.

I have also seen similar versions of the spider web graph, where the various decision criteria were not defined as the “axes”, but as the “slices of the pie.” I think that’s actually a more correct version of doing it. If you depict the criteria as axes, then the visual representation will depend on the sequence: Having three high-ranking criteria next to each other will result in a visually very large surface, while having three high-ranking criteria mixed in with three low ranking criteria will result in visually much smaller “spikes.” Using the slices of the pie to depict these results actually eliminates this error.

В спокойные и «тучные» докризисные времена многие руководители охотно соглашались с «модным» тезисом о том, что инновационный менеджмент — это драйвер конкурентоспособности компании. Сегодня ситуацию большинство руководителей описывают емким выражением «не до жиру, быть бы живу». Это связано с нестабильностью финансовой системы, очевидной необходимостью контркризисных мероприятий, сокращения затрат и т. д. При этом отношение к инновационному менеджменту как минимум осторожное и скептичное.
Причины (из опыта консультирования многих компаний) изначально кроются в искаженном понимании сути инноваций. Типичные ассоциации: инновации = большие дополнительные затраты и риски при неочевидном ROI; инновации = нечто плохо прогнозируемое и туманно измеримое; инновации = неуправляемый креатив и отсутствие управляемого процесса разработки.
Нашей задачей будет разобраться, как сделать процесс разработки и внедрения инноваций системным и управляемым, а инновационный менеджмент вместо «модного фетиша» и «скрытой угрозы» превратить в мощный и реальный инструмент повышения конкурентоспособности бизнеса.

Мир VUCA

Мы живем не только в ситуации экономического и политического кризиса, но и в мире VUCA. Концепция, которая в конце 90-х активно прорабатывалась спецслужбами, сегодня достаточно точно отражает особенности современного мира и реальность, в которой приходится работать бизнесу.
Можно предполагать, что факторы, значение которых будет только усиливаться, — это неопределенность и двусмысленность. Понятно, что старый добрый тезис Чарльза Дарвина о том, что выживают те, кто быстрее других приспосабливается, не теряет своей актуальности. «Останутся быстрые и мертвые». Очевидно, что залог успеха бизнеса в способности быстро и эффективно изменяться, то есть инновации уже актуальны.
На практике все еще сложнее. Безусловно, скорость реакции очень важна. Однако, как и в случае пожара, чтобы выжить, важно не только быстро бежать, но еще и бежать в правильном направлении. Очевидно то, что в любой кризисной (сложной, неоднозначной) ситуации необходимо иметь вектор движения. К тому же подход только «скоростной адаптации» может оказаться не вполне конкурентоспособным. Поскольку, с одной стороны, динамика изменений часто намного выше способности компании приспосабливаться. А с другой — в попытке просто быстро бежать за рынком компания часто опирается на свои не самые сильные стороны. Ну и «контрольный выстрел» — возрастающая неопределенность и двусмысленность развития событий могут нивелировать любую скорость приспособления.
Так куда же бежать? Особенность современной инновационной экономики — это не столько запоздалая, пусть и слегка, реакция на возникнувший спрос, сколько предложение, которое этот спрос формирует и при этом базируется на понимании потребностей клиентов.

Разберемся с понятиями

Инновация — не просто новая идея, а успешно внедренное новшество, решающее проблему и существенно повышающее эффективность бизнеса, в результате демонстрируя экономическую целесообразность. То есть «судим о дереве по плодам его», а не по степени экзотичности. Поэтому ключевая предпосылка для инноваций — решить проблему. Причем под проблемой понимаем не ситуацию, когда уже «клюнул жареный петух», а разрыв между текущей ситуацией и идеальным состоянием.
Чтобы это решение нашло отклик в сердцах тех, кто проголосует за него своим кошельком, важно понимать еще и отличие между креативностью и «креатиффом». Креативность — это создание нового в пределах заданных ограничений, в рамках четко поставленной задачи. Креативность не равно генерации новых идей. Идея должна приобретать явную пользу для клиентов.

Системный подход

Уже более пяти лет используя в работе подход SIT (Systematic Inventive Thinking), все больше убеждаюсь в необходимости всех трех принципов осуществления долгосрочных организационных инноваций:
Результаты: должны быть созданы и внедрены специфические инновационные решения. Навыки: людям необходимо приобрести умение и стремление мыслить по-другому, используя инструментарий для внедрения инноваций, который доказал свою эффективность.
Структуры: все бизнес-процессы и процедуры в компании должны быть пересмотрены и упорядочены, чтобы поддерживать новые инновационные практики и культуру.
При этом, используя специальные инструменты, на практике не проблема найти идеи для инновационных решений. Большинство сложностей возникают в компаниях как раз на уровне их внедрения. Зачастую, создавая системы сбора идей, компании не создают одновременно эффективных механизмов их реализации. В результате возникает профанация самой идеи и нередко потеря мотивации сотрудников. В итоге «хотели как лучше, а получилось как всегда». Поэтому задача маркетинга и всего менеджмента компании — определение и формулирование перспективных для решения проблем, создание системы сбора и проработки идей и обязательно управляемого процесса их практического внедрения.
При этом важно учитывать еще один важный аспект. Для разных этапов системного инновационного процесса необходимы различные виды мышления. Соответственно различные подходы. И только при условии, что все они работают в комплексе, мы можем говорить об успешном инновационном процессе в целом.

Что делать со «специфической спецификой» бизнеса?

Классификаций стратегий много. Один из наиболее практичных вариантов — базовые стратегии (М. Трейси и Ф. Вирсема). В качестве стратегий или «ценностных дисциплин», которые приведут компании к успеху, выделяют следующие:
  • производственное совершенство (operational excellence);
  • лидерство по продукту (product leadership);
  • близость к потребителю (customization).
Очевидна актуальность инноваций в стратегии лидерства по продукту. При этом, выбирая стратегию кастомизации, для того чтобы быть на пике и максимально соответствовать потребностям потребителей, также необходим набор инновационных идей. И в рамках стратегии производственного совершенства актуальным является избавление от непродуктивной деятельности и процессов (от muda) и логично, что являются необходимыми инновационные решения в проработке бизнес-процессов.
Еще один актуальный момент. Устойчивый тренд современных продаж — Fun, Easy, Instant — актуален как своеобразный чек-лист для оценки инновационного решения.
Осталось сделать призыв к скромности. Прекрасно, когда появляются прорывные инновации, меняющие бизнес, создающие новые рынки. Но зачастую не менее важно постоянно внедрять комплекс, пусть и небольших, системных эволюционных улучшений, которые могут давать революционный результат, независимо от того, какую стратегию выбирают компании.

Великая халява или системная работа

В рамках проектов по формированию набора инновационных решений под актуальные задачи бизнеса мы всегда уделяем особое внимание работе с типичными ловушками мышления сотрудников: структурной, функциональной фиксированностью и т. д. При этом, на мой взгляд, у нас в отношении инноваций существует системная ошибка архетипического уровня — «синдром Емели» или «великая халява для правильных пацанов». Идея к нам должна прийти в виде озарения, как гром среди ясного неба. Поэтому «по-правильному» изобретал Ньютон — легкое сотрясение мозга в результате удара тупым предметом, падающим недалеко от яблони = закон всемирного тяготения. Вообще идеально изобретал Менделеев — заснул, яркий сон в фазе быстрого движения глаз = периодическая система элементов. И практически не вызывает умиления и чувства сопричастности Эдисон со своими сотнями и тысячами опытов. Нет того романтизма и полета души. Не лишая дорогих читателей радости встречи с музой, буду настаивать, что с точки зрения отношения к инновациям как управляемому процессу, подход Эдисона более практичен.

Что делать?

Исходя из собственного практического опыта реализации успешных проектов и понимания типичных грабель, на которые наступают компании, предлагаю следующий алгоритм инновационного процесса (сфера приложения: продукты, услуги, процессы, бизнес-модель).
1. Структурный анализ текущей ситуации.
2. Четкое определение проблемы. Формирование образа идеальной ситуации и существующего «разрыва».
3. Формулировка задачи (достаточный уровень конкретизации). Набор метрик ожидаемого результата, ROI (причем как на «тестовый запуск», так и на «полное развертывание»). Из опыта работы могу сказать, что четко сформулированная задача помогает достичь более практичных результатов. В этом смысле ограничения реально стимулируют инновации.
4. Выделение (описание) ключевых элементов продукта или процесса. Это принципиально важно. Если этот этап тщательно не проработан, очень часто возникает ситуация, когда полученное решение не соответствует результатам.
5. Целенаправленное применение инструментов мышления (ТРИЗ, SCAMPER, SIT и др.). Принципиально знание, понимание и четкое следование процедуре применения инструментов.
6. Получение набора решений (виртуальных продуктов). Из практики всегда лучше иметь значительно больше, чем один вариант.
7. «Набор фильтров» — задача этого этапа отделить зерна от плевел. Увы, совершенно не обязательно вы получите гарантированный «блокбастер». Важно отсеять нежизнеспособные варианты.
Ключевые фильтры: маркетинговый (стоит ли это делать, есть ли для этого решения рынок?) и технологический (можем ли мы это сделать?). Чтобы не повторить анекдотичную историю о результате мозгового штурма в виде предложения о борьбе с подводными лодками противника путем подъема температуры мирового океана, я также рекомендую обратить внимание на следующие моменты:
  • гибкость решения (возможность доработки и т. д.);
  • «точка невозврата»;
  • легко/сложно скопировать решение;
  • потребность потребителей, на которую ориентировано решение: актуальная, скрытая, несформированная;
  • насколько радикальным является необходимое изменение поведения клиентов;
  • степень инновационности решения (качественный характер изменения);
  • «ресурсоемкость», сложность реализации;
  • степень соответствия реальным ключевым компетенциям бизнеса;
  • повышение конкурентоспособности.
На основании этих критериев формируются определенные матрицы анализа. Рекомендую исходя из этого использовать принцип трех выходов:
  1. мусорная корзина — не заниматься решением вообще;
  2. ящик стола — на перспективу;
  3. Just do it! — в реализацию.
В случае выбора выхода 2 и 3 — предварительное решение может требовать адаптации.
8. Тестовый запуск. Искренне рекомендую проводить тестовый запуск решения, изначально определив четкие критерии оценки, сформировав контур обратной связи, предусмотрев возможность своевременной коррекции. Как показывает практика, часто есть существенная разница между результатами любых методик тестирования, проведения фокус-групп и реальным поведением потребителей. Тестовый запуск позволяет это отследить.
Еще на этапе разработки мы закладываем понимание того, как будем экстраполировать результаты, которые получаем при тестовом запуске на основной запуск (полное развертывание).
9. Запуск решения. При положительном результате (соответствие или превышение ожиданий) можно переходить к основному запуску решения и акцентированному его продвижению.

Happy end

Описанный подход дает реальные результаты в малом, среднем и крупном бизнесе как в отечественных, так и иностранных компаниях. Надеюсь, вы успешно вписались в такой профиль клиента. Так что у вас все может получиться!

Способность спроса и предложения адаптироваться к изменившимся рыночным условиям называется эластичностью (В математике эластичность - это отношение относительного прироста функции (зависимой переменной) к относительному приросту аргумента (независимой переменной).)
Очевидно, что быстрота и интенсивность реакции на изменившиеся условия может быть различной. По-разному могут реагировать, например, на изменение рыночной цены на товар разные покупатели и производители. Кто-то сильнее, а кто-то слабее. Разная интенсивность реакции может наблюдаться при изменении цены на товар и при изменении дохода, при изменении моды и при изменении ценовых ожиданий. Изучение реакции типичных потребителей и типичных производителей (продавцов) на изменение тех или иных условий позволяет прогнозировать реакцию рынка в целом.
Hачнем со спроса и прежде всего - с его реакции на изменение цены на товар. Зависимость объема спроса на товар от изменения цены на него называется эластичностью спроса по цене, или иначе прямой эластичностью. Если покупатель быстро и однозначно реагирует на изменение цены, то говорят, что спрос эластичен. И, наоборот, если он реагирует слабо, вяло, то, значит, его спрос неэластичен. Если изменение цены влечет за собой такое же (в процентном отношении) изменение объема спроса, то, значит, эластичность спроса равна 1 («единичная эластичность»). Таким образом, различают три вида эластичности спроса: эластичный, неэластичный, с единичной эластичностью. Могут встречаться ситуации, когда спрос оказывается абсолютно неэластичным к любому самому большому изменению цены, или, наоборот, обладает бесконечной эластичностью. Hапример, подорожание коробка спичек с 1 коп. до 5 коп. (то есть в 5 раз!) в свое время не вызвало сокращение спроса на этот товар. С другой стороны, при фиксированных ценах их административное повышение на 20-30% было способно на какое-то время практически парализовать спрос на подорожавший товар.
Графически различная ценовая эластичность спроса на товар может быть выражена через различный наклон линий спроса. Спрос с абсолютной эластичностью (эластичностью, стремящейся к бесконечности) графически будет выглядеть как горизонтальная линия, а абсолютно неэластичный спрос - как вертикальная линия (см. рис.).
Помимо словесного заключения об эластичности или, наоборот, неэластичности спроса часто требуется дать точную количественную оценку этой характеристике спроса. Степень эластичности спроса по цене экономисты измеряют при помощи коэффициента прямой эластичности (E, price elasticity):

 
Поскольку между объемом спроса и изменением цены зависимость обратная, постольку коэффициент прямой эластичности спроса будет отрицательной величиной. Однако для оценки степени эластичности спроса по цене важен не знак перед коэффициентом, а его абсолютная величина (|E|).
Применение процентов при исчислении коэффициентов эластичности позволяет исключить влияние единиц измерения (тонн, литров, рублей и так далее) на величину эластичности.
Кроме эластичности спроса по цене товара существуют, как уже упоминалось, другие виды эластичности спроса, то есть зависимость его от других факторов (условий). К ним прежде всего относится эластичность спроса по доходу. Она отражает зависимость изменения спроса отдельного потребителя, отрасли, рынка в целом от роста или уменьшения индивидуального или совокупного денежного дохода. Формула коэффициента эластичности спроса по доходу выглядит так:

где Qd и I - первоначальные уровни объема спроса и дохода.
Численное значение коэффициента эластичности спроса по доходам используется для классификации товаров по качеству. Если EdI > 0, товар считается нормальным. Увеличение дохода, как правило, ведет к росту спроса на такие товары, то есть доход и спрос изменяются в одном и том же направлении. Товар является низкокачественным при EdI < 0, когда по мере увеличения дохода спрос на подобные товары уменьшается. В этом случае доход и спрос изменяются в противоположных направлениях. Кроме того, среди нормальных товаров можно выделить товары первой необходимости (0 < EdI < 1), второй необходимости (EdI = 1), и предметы роскоши (EdI > 1).
Следующий вид эластичности спроса - перекрестная эластичность. Коэффициент перекрестной эластичности спроса показывает зависимость процентного изменения спроса на какой-то товар «a» от процентного изменения цены на какой-то другой товар «b»:

Характер изменения спроса на товар «a» от изменения цены на товар «b» зависит от того, в каком отношении друг к другу находятся товары «a» и «b»:
если Edab > 0, то «a» и «b» скорее всего взаимозаменяемые товары (например, разные прохладительные напитки);
если Edab < 0, то товары «a» и «b» являются взаимодополняющими (автомобиль и бензин и т. п.);
если Edab = 0, то товары «a» и «b» практически не зависят друг от друга (например, хлеб и цемент).
Hа эластичность спроса оказывают влияние также другие факторы:
1. Hаличие на рынке товаров-заменителей. Чем их больше, чем ближе их полезные свойства к свойствам и характеристикам наблюдаемого товара, тем выше эластичность спроса на данный товар, и наоборот (два противоположных примера: напитки и соль).
2. Универсальность использования товара. Чем специфичнее характеристики товара, тем ниже эластичность спроса на него.
3. Фактор времени. Спрос тем более эластичен, чем длительнее период наблюдения.
4. Доля расходов в бюджете на данный товар. Чем она выше, тем сильнее эластичность спроса. Если покупатель тратит на какой-то товар незначительную часть своего бюджета, то изменение цен на этот товар обычно мало влияет на потребительский спрос.
5. Уровень доходов потребителя. Эластичность спроса на один и тот же товар у потребителей с разным уровнем доходов различна.
6. Консерватизм потребителей. Эластичность индивидуального спроса ниже всего у тех товаров, которые с точки зрения данного потребителя являются для него наиболее необходимыми.
7. «Hеоткладываемость» в удовлетворении конкретной потребности. Эластичность спроса на товары, потребление которых не может быть отложено на другой срок, крайне низкая (цветы к праздничным дням, лекарства от болезни и т. п.).
Обратимся теперь к эластичности предложения.
Как и спрос, количество предлагаемого на рынке товара находится в определенной зависимости от многих переменных и прежде всего - от рыночной цены товара. Эластичность предложения, как и эластичность спроса, колеблется в пределах от 0 до бесконечности. При тех же самых оговорках различную степень эластичности предложения можно проиллюстрировать разным наклоном линии предложения (см. рис.).
Вертикальная линия соответствует абсолютно неэластичному предложению, горизонтальная, наоборот, - абсолютно эластичному. Другие положения линии предложения будут характеризовать либо эластичное (при ES > 1), либо неэластичное (при ES < 1) предложение. Как и в случае со спросом для характеристики эластичности предложения, важны не столько абсолютные изменения цены и объема предложения, сколько их процентные изменения. Единичную эластичность предложения будет отражать линейная функция предложения, проходящая через начало координат, независимо от наклона к осям. В принципе же на верхнем участке кривой предложения эластичность меньше 1, но больше 0.
Помимо цены на эластичность предложения влияют другие факторы:
1. Цены других товаров (в том числе ресурсов). Речь идет о перекрестной эластичности предложения.
2. Способность товаров к длительному хранению и стоимость их хранения.
3. Фактор времени. Существование долговременных тенденций в изменении цен приводит к росту эластичности предложения (более подробно этот фактор рассматривается в предыдущем вопросе).
4. Уровень достигнутого использования ресурсов. Если резервов (людских, материальных и других) нет, то возможности реагирования предложения весьма ограничены.
5. Степень монополизированности отрасли и возможности перелива капитала из других отраслей.
6. Технологические особенности налаживания производства определенного товара (постройка судов и хлебопечение).

Понятие эластичности, особенно эластичности спроса, имеет прямое отношение к ценовой политике производителей. При установлении цены на свой товар, а также при определении ценовых надбавок или скидок, производитель должен улавливать те изменения, которые происходят на рынке и имеют какое-либо отношение к изменению эластичности спроса на его товар. Если у него не будет возможности учесть в ценах происходящие на рынке изменения, это может привести к потере им части прибыли, а то и рынка. Понимание ценовой эластичности часто является решающим для многих хозяйственных решений.
