The most underrated leadership skill?
Knowing when to say no.
Because every yes costs you something.
Your time.
Your focus.
Your energy.
And here’s the truth:
Saying yes to the wrong thing steals the chance to say yes to the right one.
Great leaders get this.
“No” isn’t rejection.
It’s strategy.
So how do you decide?
Here are 6 frameworks that make it easier:
• Pareto Principle (80/20) ➡ Focus on the 20% that drives 80% of results
• Eisenhower Matrix ➡ Urgent vs Important (stop mixing them up)
• OKRs ➡ If it doesn’t align with your objectives, it’s noise
• MoSCoW Method ➡ Must-haves vs nice-to-haves
• RICE Scoring ➡ Reach, impact, confidence, effort
• Kano Model ➡ Focus on what delivers core value, not vanity
Early in my career, I thought yes = commitment.
Turns out, yes = exhaustion.
The shift? I started treating “no” as focus, not failure.
And it changed everything.
